Masterclass

Following his Edward Gordon Craig lecture, Oliver Frljić delivered a masterclass on his approaches to theatre making. Frjlić focused on public and collective memory and countermemory in the Balkans, Poland and Germany. Beginning with Aeschylus’ The Persians, he worked through the ways in which the figure of the ‘enemy’ has been constructed in European theatre history. He then analysed the modes in which he rejects national identity and explores historical narratives that remain unspoken as social taboos in particular cultures. The masterclass concluded with his strategies for deconstructing representation and exploring anti-theatricality and the real. Participants were invited to devise micro-performances using Hamlet and Heiner Müller’s Hamletmachine as models for countermemory.
